Hoima, Uganda - Bamboo is increasingly becoming a beacon of hope for sustainable development in Uganda, and Kontiki Bamboo Works Limited (KBWL) is at the forefront of this transformative journey. Recently, on the 17th of September 2023, KBWL hosted a workshop aimed at exploring the opportunities of bamboo growing and value addition, drawing stakeholders from various sectors.

A diverse group of 84 stakeholders, including staff from Nyabyeeya Forest College, Kontiki Bamboo Fraternity Farmers/Out growers, representatives from Hoima Catholic Diocese, INBAR, and St Simon Vocation Hoima, gathered to familiarize themselves with KBWL's operations. The visit provided an invaluable opportunity for stakeholders to witness firsthand the entire bamboo value chain, from nursery to factory, including the carpentry and craft workshop.

"We are thrilled to see such enthusiasm and interest from stakeholders across different sectors," remarked Dr. Koojo Charles Amooti, the founder of KBWL. "Bamboo has immense potential to drive sustainable development in Uganda, and through initiatives like these workshops, we aim to showcase the opportunities available in bamboo growing and value addition."

The workshop offered insights into KBWL's innovative approaches to bamboo cultivation, highlighting the sustainable practices employed in their nursery and plantations. Attendees had the chance to tour the factory and witness the production processes involved in transforming bamboo into high-quality products, including furniture, crafts, and more.

"We were impressed by KBWL's commitment to environmental sustainability and community empowerment," stated a participant from Nyabyeeya Forest College. "The visit provided valuable knowledge and inspiration for integrating bamboo into our own initiatives."

KBWL's collaboration with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds underscores the importance of collective efforts in promoting bamboo as a viable solution for environmental conservation and economic development. By harnessing the potential of bamboo, KBWL is not only transforming landscapes but also creating opportunities for sustainable livelihoods and fostering a greener future for Uganda.
