Hoima, Uganda - In a significant stride towards sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship, Kontiki Bamboo Works Ltd (KBWL) has embarked on the production of biochar, a lightweight black residue known for its myriad benefits in soil enhancement.

Biochar, derived from the pyrolysis of biomass, particularly bamboo in KBWL's case, is gaining traction globally for its ability to improve soil nutrient availability, enhance soil aeration, and facilitate soil water filtration. Recognizing the potential of this eco-friendly solution, KBWL has partnered with Eco Green Unit from India to install a cutting-edge biochar kiln at its manufacturing facility along the Hoima-Masindi Main Road.

The initiative marks a pivotal step in KBWL's commitment to harnessing bamboo's potential for sustainable development. Dr. Koojo Charles Amooti, the founder of KBWL, emphasized the importance of capacity building and training of staff in biochar production techniques, ensuring the utilization of sustainably harvested bamboo plantation and off-cuts.

"KBWL envisions not only producing biochar but also educating and empowering farmers on its benefits and applications," stated Dr. Amooti. "Our aim is to target farmers across Uganda, offering them a sustainable solution to enhance soil fertility and crop productivity."

Biochar offers versatile applications, ranging from soil amendment to water retention and stock fodder. KBWL intends to leverage these benefits by incorporating biochar into its nursery and plantations, enriching the soil and promoting healthier plant growth.
